What is Polyphony?

Polyphony is a type of musical texture where two or more independent melodic lines are played or sung at the same time. Each line is important and moves on its own, creating a rich, interwoven sound.

Examples of Polyphony

  • A round, like "Row, Row, Row Your Boat," is a simple example of polyphony, where different voices sing the same melody starting at different times.
  • Many classical pieces, especially from the Baroque era (like Bach's music), feature complex polyphony with several melodies happening at once.
  • When different sections of an orchestra play their own distinct melodies that fit together, that's polyphony.
